# Pattern-matched wall panels vs random-cut decor

The same decor on every panel does not guarantee that its veins meet at the joints. A pattern-matched layout aligns the intended details across adjoining faces; a random-cut layout uses the same design without that planned continuation.

## Continuous pattern

Planned continuation across both directions

Face position and orientation are specified.

## Random-cut decor

Same design, different positions in the repeat

Adjoining details have no planned alignment.

Pattern-layout schematic. The white lines mark physical panel joints. This illustrates decoration, not a supplied decor, joint detail or alignment tolerance.

01

## Same decor, different result at the joint

Consider two marble-look panels cut from the same decorative-film design. They can share colour, vein character and print scale while showing different parts of the repeat. If the film is cut at different positions along its length, a vein reaching the right edge of one face may meet a different detail on the next. This is the random-cut arrangement discussed here: a common decor without a specified edge-to-edge continuation.

In a planned continuous-pattern layout, each face has a defined position and orientation within a larger image or repeat. The intended veins or other details meet at the relevant panel boundaries when the correct faces are assembled in sequence. Matching describes the decoration; the physical joint remains part of the wall system.

02

## Specify horizontal and vertical matching separately

Side-by-side continuation means that the design connects from one panel to its neighbour across a vertical joint. It does not establish that the same design also connects when another row is installed above or below. A full-height feature wall may need only the first arrangement; a taller tiled layout may require both.

For the arrangement that continues left to right and top to bottom, state both directions in the brief. A supplier may describe a particular design as four-way matching, but confirm what that means for the proposed face set. Record the panel dimensions, number of faces, placement order, permitted rotation and extent of the repeat. Ask to see the actual multi-panel layout rather than relying on the label.

03

## Continuous pattern and bookmatch are different layouts

A continuous pattern carries the image onward across adjacent faces. A bookmatch places mirrored faces next to each other, producing a reflected composition. A bookmatched pair may form a feature in its own right; it does not automatically continue indefinitely across more panels or into a second row.

Suppliers can offer combinations or use different names for their face sets. Approve a numbered elevation showing the precise arrangement. A matching colour, a shared film code, a matt or glossy finish, and a tongue-and-groove connection each answer a different specification question. None alone proves that the printed veins will align.

04

## Compare the real assembly before approving the collection

Review adjoining full-size production samples using the proposed edge profile and installation arrangement. For matching in both directions, include a two-by-two assembly, or a larger set if the design needs more faces. Assess the intended viewing distance and lighting as well as close inspection of the joins. A single swatch cannot demonstrate the transition between panels.

Agree how print position, cutting, finished dimensions and installation alignment will be assessed. Retain photographs and the numbered layout alongside the approved physical reference. Define an acceptable alignment tolerance for the selected product; avoid promising an exact millimetre match unless the production and installation specification supports it.

Panel construction and intended use still need their own approval. SPC, ABA and PVC market names do not establish the print layout. For shower walls, decorative continuity also does not establish watertightness: connections, perimeter details, penetrations and the complete installation system remain separate requirements.

05

## Keep the face sequence connected to ordering and replacement

Ask how the faces are identified on the back, packed and shown in the installation instructions. Confirm whether an order supplies complete sets, repeating runs or individually selectable faces. Record how corners, openings and trimmed panels affect the layout before finalising quantities.

Plan replacements around the same face position, orientation and approved finish. A panel from the same decor family may not replace every position in a matched set. When comparing production origins, retain both the decor reference and the layout record; carrying the collection across countries is a separate task from matching the image across adjoining panels.

Wall-panel pattern approval worksheet

| Decision | Random-cut decor | Planned pattern match |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Visual requirement | Common decor; adjoining details need not meet | Specified details continue at the approved joints |
| Matching direction | No planned edge alignment | Confirm side-by-side, stacked or both |
| Face layout | Agree variation and permitted rotation | Retain face numbers, order, orientation and repeat |
| Sample review | Several faces for colour, scale and variation | Joined full-size set showing every required direction |
| Ordering and replacement | Confirm decor and batch reference | Confirm complete sets and position-specific replacements |

## Buying questions

### Does using the same decorative film guarantee a continuous pattern?

No. A shared film design establishes the decor reference. The position of the cut, the face sequence, orientation and finished panel dimensions determine whether the intended details meet across a joint.

### What should I ask for when the pattern must continue horizontally and vertically?

Request a numbered layout and a joined sample showing left-to-right and top-to-bottom continuation for the actual decor and panel size. Confirm the number of faces and the complete repeat; side-by-side matching alone is insufficient.

### Are bookmatched panels the same as continuous-pattern panels?

Bookmatch describes mirrored faces. A continuous pattern carries the design onward. Review the supplier’s exact arrangement, because a mirrored pair does not by itself establish continuation across further panels or rows.

### Does pattern matching make the panel joints invisible or waterproof?

No. Pattern matching concerns the printed decoration. Joint visibility and wet-area performance depend on the specified edge, installation details and complete wall system.

### Are random-cut panels defective?

Random-cut decor can be the intended visual arrangement. Assess it against the agreed specification. If continuous alignment was promised, a random-cut set does not meet that same design requirement.
